If there is a cuisine that does not have a good reputation, it’s the Filipino one: too fat, too sweet, not enough balanced… However, if you go around the many fast food restaurants in the country, you can find many small traditional restaurants called Carinderia where you can find trays and pots filled with traditional hot meals, cooked with fresh, local ingredients. Driven by curiosity, our vegetarian stomachs have become interested in Filipino recipes… It’s time, let’s eat: Kain na!
October 17, 2020. It’s been four years to the day since we left Tours, Julien’s hometown, and the starting point of our hitchhiking adventure around the world. As if to make a loop, we are now heading back to Tours, unexpectedly, to attend the funeral of Julien’s grandmother who had just passed away. An early return to our homecountry that forced us to leave the Philippines on a rush, by plane, but above all to put an end to this adventure… It’s the right time to write about our four years overview, to share our state of mind and our projects for the future!
Taiwan, Australia, Japan, Singapore… These past few days, the list of countries where it’s possible to book a seat in one of the flights to nowhere (i.e. without a destination, with an identical point of arrival to the departure one) is getting longer. A worrisome phenomenon, one more aberration in a world that is already suffering adverse effects of climate change…
Few days ago, we exchanged on a hitchhiking forum about gestures that have a very different meaning in other countries. We then realized that we had some funny stories to tell, small moments of embarrassment, misunderstanding, misinterpretation because of cultural differences … Moments that we wanted to share, in our list of the most beautiful misunderstandings in hitchhiking!

May 2020. While most borders are still closed and travelers still quarantined, the world alternative traveler community has been shaken by terrible news: Couchsurfing hospitality network is forcing its registered members from “developed countries” to pay to access their profiles – without consultation, nor notification. A decision that led us to question the future of this network…
Rather active and involved in social groups between experienced (or aspiring!) alternative travelers, we came across the story of Margaux, a french woman hitchhiking solo across North and Central America for months – before the Covid-19 pandemic put an end to her journey. While volunteering in a hostel in Kyrgyzstan, we were struck by the interest and enthusiasm of a majority of travelers for attractions involving animals – such as multi-day horse treks with tired horses, or souvenir photo sessions with an eagle on arm… Choices that often exasperated us, but also raised many questions.
