Zhangjiajie, our hike in the heart of Avatar – China

Our journey in Western and Central China took us through Hunan; a province of an incredible beauty, inhabited by several ethnic minorities, endemic animal and plant species. It’s also in this subtropical climate province that we found the popular forest park of Zhangjiajie – whose natural elements are unmistakably reminiscent of the setting of the film Avatar. Curious, we let ourselves be tempted by a visit to the park. A visit under the sign of rain, mist, but also (and fortunately!) of wonders… and we can say it, of a real visual slap in the face!

The strange sunken forest of Kaindy Lake – Kazakhstan

When we traveled in southern Kazakhstan, one thing struck us: endless arid steppes have just given way to huge mountains with green slopes and snowy peaks. We were delighted to see this mountain range – hiking is our passion, and mountains are our favorite playground! We wasted no time in asking locals: “What to see in the surroundings?” “Do you know any good hiking trails?” They gave us several names, showed us pictures, pointed out places on a map. Among them was Kaindy – a spruce forest sunk in a high-altitude lake, whose specificity aroused our curiosity…

Goris peaks, Khndzoresk troglodytes and the wings of Tatev – Armenia

At the end of our Armenian roadtrip we ended up in Goris, a peaceful town in South Armenia, at the crossroads of the roads towards Nagorno Karabagh, Yerevan and Iran, our next destination. But Goris is not an Armenian city like any other – it’s a city with a special charm, and an easy starting point for two remarkable places: Khndzoresk and the wings of Tatev!

The Chiatura’s rusted cable cars – Georgia

When we were advised to visit Kastkhi Peak (a monastery built on the top of a narrow rocky outcrop, 45m above the ground), the name Chiatura was also mentioned. “It’s a very old mining town, partially abandoned, located at the bottom of a valley… There are about 17 cable car lines in the town to take you up to the heights. Take them; you will have a nice view of the town and the nearby mountains!” We quickly realized, once we got there, that the (really nice) lookouts would be nothing if there wasn’t something even nicer: a ride on rusted cable cars.

I don’t know about you, but as for us we love exploring old abandoned buildings. That’s why we really wanted, since our first day in Bulgaria, to explore Buzludzha: a building built on top of a mountain, with typical “hammer and sickle” architecture, completely abandoned since… thirty years. When we say “abandoned”, it’s not quite true: scavengers, squatters and exploratoration amateurs visit it one after the other… Interested in this communist UFO? We will tell you everything to know about this crazy exploration!

After a day’s walk in the countryside of south-western Slovenia, we met funny tourists on our way! The railway bridge that has been destroyed three times – Bosnia and Herzegovina

On our way between Mostar and Sarajevo, our driver dropped us off in Jablanica – before leaving on his own. It was noon, lunch break: we decided to take advantage of this stop between two lifts to have a picnic. With a large loaf of bread and a jar of Ajvar, we headed towards the beautiful turquoise blue river Neretva to enjoy the view it offered us… And there, surprise! We found ourselves in front of a destroyed and partly submerged railway bridge!
